Water activities
Find moderately strenuous whitewater rafting and kayaking on the Cangrejal River. Rapids run from Class I through Class IV, with larger rapids becoming a possibility during the rainy season. Though this is a popular activity, the river isn’t crowded with tourists.
A visit to Cayos Cochinos
This group of reefs, cays and small islands right off the coast near La Ceiba serves as the home to the local Garifuna people. Visit their traditional villages, where you can learn about their indigenous dancing, cuisine and culture.
A day of hiking
Pico Bonito National Park encompasses a cloud forest and miles of hiking trails. A number of small waterfalls and swimming holes are also found in the park, so don’t forget to carry a swimsuit.
Abundant wildlife
In addition to the incredible array of wildlife and birds found in Pico Bonito National Park, a nearby nature reserve located between the Cuero and Salado Rivers protects wildlife in the wetlands and along the coastline. Among the creatures found here are endangered manatees.

La Ceiba has a number of “eco-lodges” that welcome you to kick back. Though the actual environmental impact of these accommodations is a bit questionable, they are surrounded by a beautiful and relaxing landscape.
