Most visitors to the Cardrona Valley see it through a car window. Our guests see it from the top, engine rumbling beneath them, tussock and rock stretching out in every direction. This Cardrona quad bike tour takes you all the way up the mountain, stopping along the way as the working farmland gives way to raw alpine terrain — and the views keep growing.

You don’t need experience on a quad bike. What you need is a willingness to follow instructions, dress for the conditions, and let the mountain do the rest. Kel, who founded The Cardrona Horse Treks & ATV Adventures 13 years ago and still leads the operation today, has built a tour that works for first-timers and seasoned riders alike.

Experience the Cardrona on a Quad Bike

A two-hour guided quad bike ride into the high country above Wanaka’s Cardrona Valley, with departures at 10am and 1pm. Guides run through the bikes and controls before the group sets off, then lead the ride at a pace suited to whoever’s along that day — no prior quad experience needed to take part.

The route climbs out of the valley floor into open mountain terrain, gaining enough height that Lake Wanaka and the surrounding ranges come into view. Guides stop at points along the way for photos and to talk through the landscape, then lead the group back down to finish around the two-hour mark.

What to Expect When You Arrive

Pull up to the base and you’ll be greeted by the guides, plus two barn cats who have become something of a local legend among guests. The reception area is a cozy, rustic space with a fireplace, which sets the tone before you even get on a bike.

Once you’ve signed in, guides fit you with a helmet and any weatherproof gear you need. Then comes a thorough riding instruction and safety briefing. Kel’s team spends real time on this part, because the trail demands respect and confident riders have more fun.

The Ride Up

Across the Flat: Getting Comfortable

The tour starts on flat paddocks and gravel road. This stretch is intentional. It gives everyone time to get comfortable with the bikes before the mountain begins. The group rides in single file with the lead guide at the front, and guides make regular stops to check in with every rider and share commentary on the valley.

The Yamaha Kodiak 450cc 4WD quad bikes are capable machines, with heated handle grips that come in handy once the trail climbs into colder air. On flat ground they feel solid and straightforward. By the time the trail starts to climb, most riders have settled into the rhythm.

Through the Working Farm

The ascent runs through 15,000 acres of private farmland the operation has exclusive access to, and it shows. This is active, working land. You’ll likely spot sheep and cattle along this stretch, and rabbits often dart through the grass. Depending on the day, shepherds and farm dogs might be at work too. Guests consistently mention how much that adds to the experience.

As the trail climbs, the guides weave in commentary on the Cardrona Valley’s history, including the 1860s Gold Rush that shaped the region, along with notes on local flora and fauna. It’s the kind of detail that makes the landscape click.

Into the Alpine Zone

Higher up, the trail changes character. Gravel and grass give way to rock and tussock. The air gets noticeably colder, and quieter. On a clear day the stillness up here is its own reward. In winter, or even some summer mornings, there’s snow, underfoot some days and just dusting the distant peaks on others. It’s never guaranteed, but when it happens, it changes everything.

This is where the stops feel earned. The guides pause here so riders can take photos and catch their breath in the cold mountain air before the final push to the top.

Coming Back Down

The descent follows a gravel road, which is an easier ride than the ascent. After about two hours on the mountain, the group returns to the base building, where the journey gets a proper send-off: a recap with projected photos on a big screen. Images from the ride are available to purchase for NZ$25 cash, a good option given how hard it is to photograph yourself while navigating a steep trail.

Not Everyone Has to Drive

This is something most travel articles miss entirely. If someone in your group isn’t comfortable driving a quad bike, they don’t have to sit out. Guides can carry passengers safely and comfortably in Yamaha Viking off-road buggies, with a guide behind the wheel. Self-drive options for the buggies are available as well.

Mixed groups work well here. Some people ride quad bikes, others travel as passengers in buggies, and if the group wants to combine it with horse trekking, that’s a conversation worth having with Kel’s team directly. The operation is set up to accommodate different combinations, and it’s worth asking.

Practical Information

Timing and Conditions

The tour runs year-round, in all weather. Conditions in the alpine zone change quickly, and the temperature at the top can approach 0°C even in summer, especially with wind chill. Cold and wet weather comes with the territory, and the tour still runs.

Cost

This Cardrona quad bike tour, officially called the Mountain Experience, runs around two hours and starts from NZ$349 per adult rider. Riders must be 16 or older to drive a quad bike solo; younger guests can join as passengers in a buggy instead.

What to Wear and Bring

The base provides helmets, extra layers, gumboots, and gloves. You don’t need to arrive fully kitted out. That said, if you’re visiting on a sunny day, the ride back down a gravel road can get dusty, and a balaclava or face covering will make a noticeable difference. Muddy conditions are common and, as most guests discover, entirely worth it.

Getting There

The Cardrona is located in the Cardrona Valley, Central Otago, South Island, about 20 minutes from Wānaka and 45 minutes from Queenstown. Check current road conditions before heading out, particularly in winter when mountain passes can be affected by snow.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can complete beginners ride the quad bikes?

Yes. The safety and riding instruction at the start of the tour is detailed enough that no prior experience is needed, and the first section of the trail is deliberately flat to build confidence before the climb begins. Riders must be 16 or older to drive solo; younger guests can join as passengers in a buggy instead.

What if someone in my group doesn’t want to drive?

Non-drivers can ride as passengers in the Yamaha Viking off-road buggies, with a guide behind the wheel. It’s a full experience of the mountain, with the same stops and the same views, minus the self-drive element.

Can you combine quad biking with horse trekking for a mixed group?

Yes. The operation runs both quad bike and horse trekking experiences, and mixed-group arrangements are possible. It’s worth raising this when you book so the team can plan accordingly.

What should I do about the cold at the top?

Dress in layers regardless of how warm it feels at the base. The operation provides weatherproof gear, but wearing thermal underlayers and a warm mid-layer of your own gives you more flexibility. Wind chill at altitude can be significant even on a clear day.

Is there any chance of seeing snow?

Snow at the top is possible but never guaranteed. It depends on the season and the conditions that day, and it has appeared in summer as well as winter. If it does show up, the guides make the most of it.

How long does the Cardrona quad bike tour take?

The tour runs for approximately two hours on the mountain, with the post-ride photo recap adding a little time at the end. Factor in time to arrive and get kitted out before the ride starts.
