Dubrovnik is a beautiful city that exceeds expectations in the looks department.

However, it is a tourist trap with prices being higher than many other parts of Croatia.

Whilst visitors have to live with this if they want to enjoy the city, there’s one way you can score a small victory over those ‘entrepreneurs’ waiting to part you from your Kunas.

Don’t pay hiked up prices in the tourist shops for drinking water. Fill up your water bottle for free from the Onofrios Fountain inside Pile Gate – the main entrance to the old town.

You can probably fill up from other fountains – I’ve seen people do it at the fountain outside of Pile Gate – but having drunk from the Onofrios without keeling over, I know the water is perfectly fine; better than fine, it tastes wonderful.
